Bear Claw Diggings

Gold mine in Deadwood Gulch[1] in 1877.[2]

In May of 1877,[2] the miners of Bear Claw Diggings put together $10,000 in gold dust to bet on a boxing match between Madame Pompey's Mystery Man against Tony Cadiz's Battling Kreuger at the Golden Nugget Saloon in Deadwood. Cadiz's money was tapped and he could not accept the Bear Claw bet at his guaranteed two-to-one odds. But his wife, Coral Stacy, put the Golden Nugget itself up to cover the bet. After Bret Maverick beat Kreuger in the ring, Cadiz was forced to pay $35,000 to other bettors and hand over ownership of the saloon and all its contents to the miners of Bear Claw Diggings.[1]
