Burt, Andrew[1][2]

City marshal[3] of Salt Lake City, Utah Territory,[4] in 1876.[3] (October 20, 1828August 25, 1883)[4]

Friend to Judge Somervell.[3] Elected to office in February of 1876.[5]

In July of 1876, the marshal was called to the Capital City Hotel after Bart Maverick had been found unconscious in the murdered Charles W. Farfan's hotel room. When Bart regained consciousness, in the presence of the doctor and hotel clerk, the marshal questioned him as to his stolen suitcase and his connection to Farfan. Before leaving, the marshal told Bart not to plan on leaving town until the matter was settled. Shortly afterwards, Judge Somervell visited the marshal to tell him the suitcase stolen from Bart was actually his, switched by accident after a stagecoach ride together from Grantsville. Somervell explained the value of documents in the suitcase incriminating the Stuart Machine and the importance of hushing the matter up for the sake of the integrity of the honest population of the territory and its bid for statehood. When Bart brought Quincy Bigelow, who had information about Farfan's murder and the theft of the suitcase, to the marshal, he feigned ignorance of the entire matter. Bart recovered the incriminating documents and was forced to kill Hazelton and his Stuart Machine thugs over them in self-defense in an empty warehouse. Answering reports of gunfire, the marshal, Somervell and Janet Kilmer investigated the warehouse, finding only Bart alive and reading the documents. The marshal vouched for Somervell's honesty in trying to recover the papers.

In August of 1883, the marshal was killed in the line of duty while apprehending a gunman in a downtown restaurant.[6]
