Cedar Rapids

River town in Iowa.[1]

Situated on the Cedar River, first settled in 1841. First named Rapids City for the river's nearby rapids, but renamed Cedar Rapids in 1848.[1]

The 1850s saw an influx of Czechoslovakians arriving to work the packing plants, creating a sector of the city know as Little Bohemia. The economy began to grow further in the 1870s when Irish immigrants established one of the nation's largest meat packing companies. Other major industries began to move into the area, including the cereal mill, Quaker Oats.[1]
