Chihuahuan Desert

North American desert occupying parts of southeastern Arizona Territory, southern New Mexico Territory, southwestern Texas and north and central Mexico.[1]

The name, often identified with the Mexican State of Chihuahua, is unclear, but often said to be derived from the ancient Aztec word xicuahua, meaning "dry, sandy place."[2]

Relic of Fort Tejon: In July of 1878,[3] Bret Maverick tracked Carl Jimson into the[4] Chihuahuan[4] Desert from Silver Springs,[4] New Mexico Territory.[3] Jimson was ostensibly heading to Crown City to bring a doctor back to Silver Springs to help Donna Seely recover from a gunshot wound. But Bret guessed correctly that Jimson was actually fleeing Silver Springs to avoid Donna, upon her regaining consciousness, identifying Jimson as the one who shot her. The sun's relentless heat took its toll on the horses Bret and Jimson were riding, and the two men had to make there ways through the desert on foot. Fortunately for Bret, Fatima had tracked him into the desert and provided him with water and transportation. Together, they were able to apprehend Jimson.[4]
