close-hauling

Arrangement of sail to trim the canvas as close as possible to windward and still move forward. A basic sailing maneuver.[1]

The Wrecker: In December of 1871[2] in San Francisco, Bart Maverick negotiated with Captain Nares to charter the Norah Creina to Midway Island to salvage the wreck of the Flying Scud. With no money to pay Nares, Bart offered him and his crew a ten-percent commission on the profits of salvaging the Flying Scud. Nares scoffed at the offer, claiming it wouldn't pay for the job of close-hauling the jib, a very minor task.[3]
