drag

Cattle trail-hand position, near the rear or following the herd.[1]

The cowboy riding drag looks ahead into the herd to watch for stray cattle, dropped equipment or any other problem behind point and flank positions. They are also responsible for closing gates or replacing other items once the herd has passed, as well as acting as the voice of the trail boss to other cowhands working towards the back of the herd.[1]

Trail West to Fury: Bart Maverick assigned Mike to ride drag at the outset of the Miller cattle drive in Tulare Meadow, August 12, 1867.[2]
