Fillipe Ranch

Ranch just to the north of Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1]

Owned and operated by Henrique Fillipe.[1]

In April of 1876,[2] John and Daisy Haskell were guests of the Fillipe Ranch when Daisy and Henrique Fillipe began a clandestine romance together. Haskell discovered the affair and confronted Fillipe about it at gunpoint. The confrontation escalated into a duel and Fillipe shot and killed Haskell. To hide the body, Fillipe threw it into a mine shaft on the property.[1]

Shortly afterwards, Daisy hired Bart Maverick to escort her by stagecoach from Santa Fe to Laramie, Wyoming Territory, posing as her late husband. Fillipe arranged for the stage to pick them up early in the morning at the Fillipe Ranch before it arrived in Santa Fe. As the stage was leaving, Fillipe presented Bart with a Winchester carbine with a hollowed-out stock, ostensibly as protection along the Santa Fe Trail. But the hollow stock was intended to hide Daisy's jeweled necklace and derringer to make them appear to have been stolen after she was to shoot and kill Bart in La Mesa.[1]

After the stage left the ranch, Fillipe dropped half a ton of rock down the mine shaft on top of Haskell's body to help ensure it would not be found. In La Mesa, after Bart learned Fillipe and Daisy's plot, Haskell's body was able to be recovered from the mine shaft on the ranch.[1]

Back in Santa Fe, Fillipe was tried for the murder of John Haskell and the attempted murder of Bart Maverick. After a ten-year prison sentence, he returned to his ranch, where he lived the remainder of his life.[2]

Today, the site of the Fillipe Ranch is a residential development for condominiums.[2]
