John Harmon was a prolific bit actor, appearing in hundreds of character roles from the 1930s into the '80s. He is probably best remembered for his recurring role as hotel clerk Eddie Halstead in The Rifleman and for his roles in two Star Trek fan favorites, "The City on the Edge of Forever" and "A Piece of the Action."

Harmon was an avid bibliophile, and collected Mark Twain first editions. Later in life, he owned and operated a used books store in Woodland Hills, California.[1]
