Traditional American song, likely Appalachian in origin. Published sheet music dates back to the Civil War, but the song is likely much older, perhaps dating back to the late 18th century.[1]

 

 

Escape to Tampico: In June of 1877,[2] Amy Lawrence sang "He's Gone Away"to Chicuelo's guitar as Bret Maverick entered La Cantina Americana for the first time.[3]
