Hotel Bossert

Fine hotel in San Francisco[1] in 1871.[1]

Room 119 was the site of a four-day poker game between Bret Maverick and controlling members of the Ring: Longhurst, Campbell, Willimen and Merchison.[1]

In November of 1871,[2] Bret Maverick learned that controlling members of the Ring were also poker players, and arranged for a game with them with them at his room, number 119, at the Hotel Bossert. Hoping to win his way into the Ring through building trust with them at poker, Bret believed he would have a better chance with Brother Bart's aid. He sent for Bart,[1] who arrived in December,[2] just as Bret was about to win a hand with Longhurst. Bret's pair of aces won his way into the Ring without Bart's help. Bart stayed with Brother Bret at the Hotel Bossert while in San Francisco until shipping out for Midway Island aboard the Norah Creina.[1] Bret remained a guest of the hotel until he had paid his creditors and shipped out aboard the HMS Tempest after Bart.[2]
