hotel clerk

Hotel clerk at the Barker House in Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1] (May 11, 1850February 5, 1909)[2]

In April of 1876,[2] the hotel clerk checked Daisy Haskell into the Barker House under her maiden name as Daisy Harris. She knew Bart Maverick was staying there during his first visit to Santa Fe, and she intended to hire him to pose as her assumed husband John and travel with her to Laramie, Wyoming Territory. After Daisy offered Bart $1,000 for the job, Bart declined, but was intrigued by the proposition. As he came downstairs to join the best poker game in Santa Fe in the hotel's lobby, Bart stopped by the clerk's desk to ask him how long Daisy had been living at the hotel. The clerk informed him she had just checked in that evening. Bart then asked if the clerk knew anything about her, but he responded that he didn't. Intrigued himself, the clerk asked Bart if he knew who she was. Bart told him he was working on it, an idea which the clerk seemed to appreciate.[1]
