Hotel Royale

Fine hotel in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana,[1] in 1879.[2]

Henri Devereaux kept a town suite at the Hotel Royale.[1]

In April of 1879,[2] Inspector Marvin visited Henri Devereaux at his Hotel Royale town suite after the abduction of his daughter Yvette. As they discussed the case and a reward, Bart Maverick arrived with information on where Yvette was being held hostage, and of his plan to rescue her. But before he could carry out his plan, Marvin hauled him into police headquarters.[1]

In 1886, Sicilian-born Antonia Monteleone purchased the Hotel Royale. When the adjacent Commercial Hotel became available, he took the opportunity to expand. By 1908, the hotel had added more than 300 rooms and had changed its name to Hotel Monteleone.[3]

Over the years, the Hotel Monteleone became a favorite of many names in literature, including Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Earle Stanley Gardner, Stephen Ambrose, Truman Capote, Anne Rice and John Grisham. To this day, the hotel remains owned and operated by the Monteleone family.[3]
