loan shark

Preditory lender of money, generally illegal in practice, demanding extremely high interest rates, often enforced through blackmail, violence or other extortion.[1]

The Wrecker: In December of 1871,[2] Bret Maverick purchased the wreck of the Flying Scud at auction for salvage. After a bidding war with Thomas Bellairs, Bret bought the shipwreck for $21,000. In order to pay for the derelict, Bret was concerned he would have to finance his debt through a loan shark.[3]
