ON THE RIVER

Bret Maverick took the Dakota Queen up the Missouri River from St. Louis[1] bound for Fort Pierre[2] on his way to Deadwood.[1] But as the steamboat passed Winnebago Bend, Tony Cadiz had Battling Kreuger knock Bret out out and then robbed him of all his money. Cadiz then had Kreuger throw Bret overboard into the river. Bret swam to shore where Dandy Jim Buckley happened to be marooned on a sand bar. Bret agreed to swim Buckley across the river a quarter of a mile[1] to the Iowa side[2] in exchange for half an interest in Buckley's treasure map to $40,000 in buried Wells Fargo gold dust.[1]

HIS POKER

In a round of poker with Tony Cadiz aboard the Dakota Queen, Bret Maverick bet Cadiz $2,000. Cadiz raised Bret $2,000. Bret had to borrow the money to cover the raise from Madame Pompey. Pompey, anxious to see Cadiz lose, told Bret that if he lost, he owed her nothing. But if he won, Bret would owe 50% interest. Bret agreed and won more than $4,000 from Cadiz. Pompey was grateful to Bret for paying her the easiest thousand dollars she ever made.[2]

THE $1,000 BILL

In a poker game with Tony Cadiz aboard the Dakota Queen[1] bound for Fort Pierre,[2] Bret Maverick used his $1,000 of getaway money as part of a raise. Bret won the hand but after the game, Cadiz had Battling Kreuger knock him out and Cadiz and Coral Stacey robbed Bret of all his winnings. After Dandy Jim Buckley helped Bret climb out of the Missouri River after Kreuger threw him overboard, Bret discovered even his getaway money had been stolen.[1]

NEVER TAKE A DRINK

After winning a big poker hand against Tony Cadiz aboard the Dakota Queen, Bret Maverick bought Madame Pompey's girls a round of drinks to celebrate. Pompey remarked that she didn't know Bret was a drinker. He confirmed that he wasn't, but he could still buy a drink for his friends.[1]

BUSHWHACKED IN AN ALLEY OUTSIDE A SALOON

Since Bret Maverick was on a riverboat in the middle of the Missouri River, he technically was not bushwhacked in an alley outside a saloon. But he was bushwhacked on the deck outside the Dakota Queen's salon, robbed of all his money and thrown overboard.[1]

THROWN IN JAIL

Bret Maverick and Dandy Jim Buckley knew that the jail in Whiskey Flats had been built over where $40,000 of stolen Wells Fargo gold dust had been buried. Buckley planted his pocket watch in Bret's coat and had the town marshal arrest him for stealing it. When the marshal left for the night, Buckley passed a pick and shovel to Bret through the bars so he could dig up the gold dust and pass it out to him. Bret filled two bags with dirt and gave them to Buckley instead of the real gold dust, knowing Buckley would abandon him and leave him in jail. After Buckley left, Bret continued digging until he was outside the jail with the gold dust.[1]

WINNINGS

Bret Maverick won $4,300 from Tony Cadiz in a poker game aboard the Dakota Queen[1] bound for Fort Pierre[2] from St. Louis. In Deadwood, Bret earned $4,000 from a $2,000 two-to-one bet on fighting Battling Kreuger.[1]

LOSSES

After his poker game with Tony Cadiz aboard the Dakota Queen, Cadiz and Coral Stacey robbed Bret Maverick of his winnings of $4,300.[1]

Bret Maverick collected $2,000 reward for his share in returning $40,000 in stolen gold dust to the Wells Fargo office in Vermillion, Dakota Territory.[1]
