McComb's

A hotel and saloon in Echo Springs,[1] Utah Territory[2] in 1870.[1]

Although the name of the establishment was McComb’s, named for Big Mike McComb, it was owned by Phineas King.[1] King gave McComb the reigns to the operation after McComb proved himself a worthy business associate.[2]

On street level, McComb’s had a hotel lobby with an adjoining saloon, while hotel rooms were on the second floor. Phineas King also kept rooms in the hotel, where he held a weekly high-stakes poker game on Saturday nights with some of his trusted business associates.[1]

No hotel signage was visible on the building's exterior, perhaps because of the hotel’s discriminating taste in guests.[2] McComb’s Saloon, however, was open to all, and was a popular gathering place in town. During election night in 1870, the election results were tallied and announced in the saloon.[1]

It may be possible the name of the hotel is the Bella Union, as depicted in the Dell adaptation of "War of the Silver Kings," however there is no indication of this name anywhere in the television version.

In 1870, Bret Maverick checked into the hotel at McComb’s. After sitting in on one of King's elite poker games, he discovered someone wanted him out of town and booked an additional two weeks to learn who wanted him to leave, and why. He eventually extended his stay until his business in establishing the New Hope Mining Company and its ultimate merging with the Silver Lady Mine was concluded.[1]

McComb’s lost its manager and namesake when Big Mike left Echo Springs as a result of a falling out with King over King’s methods of dealing with Bret.[1]
