Miner

Miner at Cold Creek Diggings in Deadwood Gulch in the Black Hills, Dakota Territory,[1] in 1877. (September 8, 1820 July 12, 1901)[2]

In May of 1877,[2] the miner and several of his friends from Cold Creek Diggings collected $3,000 to wager their champion, Red McClintock, against Tony Cadiz's boxer, Battling Kreuger, at two-to-one odds. When McClintock lost the match to Kreuger in less than thirty seconds, the miner put his faith in Madame Pompey's Mystery Man. Pompey assured the miner her Mystery Man would slaughter Kreuger and he should bet all the gold dust he could on the match the following night. By then, the miner had gone in with some miners from Bear Claw Diggings for a total of $10,000. The wager tapped Cadiz, but Coral Stacey offered to put the Golden Nugget Saloon up as security to cover the bet. When Bret Maverick stepped in as Pompey's Mystery Man and beat Kreuger in the match, Cadiz lost his saloon to the miner and his partners in the wager. Taking possession of the bar immediately, the miner began celebrating the victory by giving away free alcohol to everyone in the saloon.[1]
