Mountain Meadow

Meadow[1] in the bluffs along the Nebraska side of the Missouri River[2] near Vermillion, Dakota Territory[1] in 1877.[2] Site of the Diamond Shape Falls and the town of Whiskey Flats.[1]

One of the last landmarks on Dandy Jim Buckley's treasure map to $40,000 of buried Wells Fargo gold dust, located below the ridge between the Twin Peaks. The buried treasure was located sixty paces due north of the meadow's Diamond Shape Falls.[1]

Following his map, Buckley found the site[1] in April of 1877,[2] but discovered the town of Whiskey Flats had been built in the meadow since the map had been drawn, and the town jail had been constructed directly on top of the buried gold dust. Returning later in the month with Bret Maverick, Buckley planted his pocket watch in Bret's coat and had the town marshal arrest Bret for pickpocketing. After the marshal locked the jail up for the night, Buckley passed a pick and shovel through the bars of Bret's cell window. Bret dug through the dirt floor of his cell and recovered the buried gold dust and dug his way under the jail walls to freedom by morning.[1]
