Newport

Seaside city in Rhode island.

Founded in 1639 by political and religious refugees from Portsmouth, Rhode island.[1]

Quakers and Jews were attracted to Newport as a haven for religious tolerance. The town became an agricultural outpost and one of the American colonies' leading seaports. The British occupation during the Revolutionary War devastated Newport's economy, so industrialization was slow in coming. As a result, Newport's pastoral and picturesque setting began to attract artists, writers, architects, scientists, philosophers and other visitors, and Newport was gradually transformed into a resort area. Many wealthy and influential families built their mansions in Newport, helping the town to become known as the Queen of the Resorts.[1]
