City and major trade center in Pennsylvania.[1]

 

Founded as a colony in 1682 and named after the Greek term for "brotherly love" by Pennsylvania founder William Penn, due to his belief the colony would be a haven for religious freedom. Chartered as a city in 1701.[1]

 

In the 1750s, Philadelphia Benjamin Franklin helped improve city services by introducing a fire department, public library and hospital. Philadelphia surpassed Boston as the largest city and busiest port in the American colonies. The city became an important center for the American Revolution. The Declaration if Independence was signed in Philadelphis'a Independence Hall and after the War, served as the temporary capital of the United States while the District of Columbia was under construction.[1]

The Thirty-Ninth Star: In 1865,[3] Janet Stuart moved to Philadelphia[4] from Salt Lake City[3] to go to school. There, she met a man named Kilmer and married him[4] in 1869.[3]

 

The Jeweled Gun: In 1870, John Haskell and Daisy Harris were married in Philadelphia.[3] There, they lived on a private estate where they employed a stable groom, Snopes, who proved to be of questionable character.[5] Haskell discharged Snopes in 1873. In November of that year, the Haskells left Philadelphia to pursue the booming cattle industry in the West and relocated to Laramie, Wyoming Territory.[3]

 

The Thirty-Ninth Star: In 1874,[3] Janet Kilmer was widowed and in 1876, moved back to her home town[4] in Salt Lake City.[3]
