point

Cattle trail-hand position, at the head of the herd.[1]

Riding point is the most honored post on a drive. The cowboy riding point determines the direction and pace of the drive by driving the lead steers that the rest of the herd has learned to follow.[1]

Trail West to Fury: Bart Maverick assigned Hank to ride point at the outset of the Miller cattle drive in Tulare Meadow, August 12, 1867.[2]
