Born Holly Alan Bane, he took the stage name Mike Ragan to sound more rugged. Ragan originally wanted to be a big-band musician. When that didn't work out, he took a job as Office Boy at MGM and from there got into working in the makeup department. Eventuall, he found himself in front of the camera, often playing Western heavies. When Westerns faded in the 1960s, he went back to working full-time in makeup for television.[1]
