Sheriff

Sheriff in White Rock, Texas in 1872.[1] (May 29, 1829 – February 13, 1917)[2]

A respected, no-nonsense man who ran a peaceful and orderly town.[1]

On the night of June 12, 1872, Bret Maverick came to him in his office to ask about Mary Shane. The sheriff informed Bret that he thought highly of Mrs. Shane since she came to White Rock nearly a year before, but she had died nine days before Bret came to town. The sheriff had little patience for Bret's story of giving Mary's ghost a buggy ride outside of town earlier in the evening. When Bret mentioned he would call on Bert Nicholson, Mary's fiance, the next day, he suggested Bret should just leave town and not bother grieving people with jokes.[1]

The next day, the sheriff heard a shot and thought Bret was shooting at someone. When Bret explained someone was shooting at him, the sheriff admitted the shot sounded like a rifle rather than Bret's revolver.[1]

When Nicholson was found dead later that day, he believed Bret was the only one with a grudge against him, so he arrested him for murder. The sheriff left his deputy, George, in charge of watching over Bret in jail. Felton posed as Bret's attorney and helped Bret escape, but killed the deputy after Bret got away.[1]

When Bret appeared the next day in town with Mary Shane, Felton and a stolen Wells Fargo treasure box, the sheriff came to believe Bret's story and invited him to stay in town while Bret waited for the reward money to come from Wells Fargo.[1]
