Snopes

Stableman[1] in Cimarron,[2] New Mexico Territory in 1876.[1] (March 1, 1827April 30, 1876)[2]

Born into poverty in the East End of London, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1857. Hired by John Haskell as a stable groom in 1871. Due to his questionable character, Haskell discharged Snopes in 1873. Snopes moved west, eventually settling in Cimarron, New Mexico Territory, where he began his own livery in 1876.[1] In April of that year, he was in the lobby of the St. James Hotel when Bart Maverick and Daisy Haskell registered for a room as Mr. and Mrs. John Haskell. Recognizing Daisy as the Mrs. Haskell for whom he once worked, he realized he man she was traveling with was not the real John Haskell. After Bart left the hotel to find a poker game in town, Snopes attempted to blackmail Daisy to keep her secret. Daisy pulled her jeweled derringer on Snopes and, when he attempted to retreat and draw his own gun, Daisy shot and killed him. When the sheriff investigated the incident, she told him Snopes had attempted to steal her jewelry.[1]
