Stevedore on the levee in New Orleans[1] in 1879. (June 3, 1836 – March 12, 1893)[2]

In April of 1879,[2] Bart Maverick arrived in New Orleans and was looking for directions to meet Brother Bret at 17 Rue Rubidoux. A few other dock workers paid no attention to him, but Bart was able to get the friendly stevedore's attention. Bart mispronounced Rubidoux as "Rubiducks." The stevedore chuckled warmly, corrected Bart's pronunciation, and gave him clear direction to the address.[1]
