Ute

An Indian nation whose name means "land of the sun" in its own language.[1]

The Ute Indians once occupied the eastern Utah, western Colorado and portions of the New Mexico and Wyoming territories. The Ute Treaty of 1868 established the Ute Reservation and the tribes were moved into that region.[1]

Trail West to Fury: In August of 1871,[2] the Maverick Brothers and Dandy Jim Buckley were caught in a torrential downpour near Pueblo, Colorado Territory. Bret Maverick blamed the deluge on the tradition Ute snake dance believed to conjure rain.[3]
