Alaska
Possession of the United States. Purchased from Russia for $7,200,000 for the United States on April 9, 1867, instigated by U. S. Secretary of State William H. Seward. Possession was taken on October 18, 1867 and designated the Department of Alaska.[1]
Named by Russia during its colonial period for the Eskimo-Aleut word Alyeska, meaning "object to which action of the sea is directed."[1]
Brasada Spur: In August of 1872,[2] Bart Maverick claimed Dr. Tuckaroo left King City,[3] Kansas[2] for Alaska, or perhaps California.[3]
On May 17, 1884, The Department of Alaska was redesignated as the District of Alaskauntil August 24, 1912 when became the Alaska Territory. Alaska was granted statehood January 3, 1959.[1]
