Arthur
Bartender at McComb’s Saloon, Echo Springs,[1] Utah Territory[2] in 1870. (June 17, 1821 – December 17, 1888)[2]
A friendly and hospitable man, Arthur (like many bartenders) would occasionally have to get tough in order to keep the peace in his bar. He would sometimes have to remove Joshua Thayer from the premises for mooching drinks from other customers, although Arthur had sympathy for Thayer.
In 1870, Bret Maverick convinced Arthur to cast his vote for Thayer for District Judge in hopes that a few votes on election day may give Thayer a reason to quit drinking. Bret had secretly convinced many others in Echo Springs to do likewise. On election night, Arthur manned the election results tote board at McComb’s Saloon and was surprised to chalk up the counted ballots for Thayer, who had won by a landslide. [1]
