Barker House
Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1]
In April of 1876,[2] Bart Maverick stayed at the Barker House, not because it was the best hotel in Santa Fe, but because it had the best poker game. Henrique Fillipe visited Bart there to present Daisy Haskell's job offer of escorting her to Laramie posing as her husband, John Haskell, for $500. When Bart declined, Daisy took a suite at the Barker House to be close to Bart, hoping he would reconsider. When he continued to decline her offer, she raised it to $1,000. Bart still declined, but after losing all his money in the hotel's poker game that night, he decided to accept Daisy's offer if she would pay him half up front. She agreed, and Bart parlayed the stake into well over $1,000.[1]
