Beelzebub, John
Fictitious name humorously ascribed to Paul Carthew, alias Matthew Higgins, by Captain Nares.[1]
A reference to one of the Biblical names for the devil.[2]
Aboard the Norah Creina[1] in December of 1871,[3] Bart Maverick inquired after a crewman giving the name of Matthew Higgins. Captain Nares told Bart sarcastically that he didn't care if the crewman's name was John Beelzebub, since he needed to put together a crew quickly for the voyage to Midway Island and wasn't particular who he could find.[1]
