Bellairs, Thomas
Attorney in San Francisco, California,[1] in 1871. (January 31, 1827 – September 21, 1916)[2]
In December of 1871,[2] Bellairs was hired by a man identifying himself as James Dickson in San Francisco to bid up to $20,000 for the wreck of the Flying Scud at auction. Bret Maverick, newly associated with the Ring, found himself bidding against Bellairs up to $20,500. Bret won the auction at $21,000, forcing Bellairs out of the bidding. Wondering why Bellairs had pushed the price so high, Brother Bart approached the enibriated Bellairs at a local saloon after the auction to find out the name of Bellairs' principal. Bellairs was reluctant to reveal the name, but after Bart bribed him with $500 as a legal "fee," Bellairs considered himself to be under Bart's employ and revealed the the name of James Dickson.[2]
