Belleforest
Plantation in Louisiana[1] in 1879.[2]
Situated along the Mississippi River, 64 miles upriver from New Orleans. Established by Étienne Devereaux in 1796 as a sugar plantation, and named for 16th-century French writer François de Belleforest.[2]
Frédéric Devereaux, Étienne Devereaux's son and heir, died in 1851, leaving Belleforest to his own son, Henri, who operated the plantation until his death in 1917.[2]
In April of 1879, Henri Devereaux threatened to send his daughter Yvette back to Belleforest from New Orleans to keep her from seeing Jody Collins.[1]
Today, the site of Belleforest is on land owned and operated by the Mosaic Company as a producer of phosphate.[2]
