In April of 1876, in the lobby of the St. James Hotel in Cimarron,[2] New Mexico Territory, Snopes pretended to read an issue of The Bent Forks Public Record to look inconspicuous as he spied on the activities of Daisy Haskell and Bart Maverick.[1]
