Brasada Spur engineer
Engineer for the Brasada Spur in 1872.[1] (February 22, 1837 – September 6, 1907)[2]
In September of 1872, the engineer drove the train along the Brasada Spur's route northward from Chaseville,[1] Kansas,[2] under Bart Maverick's direction, to intercept another Brasada Spur train commandeered by Great Western Railroad men in Junction City. Bart's intention was to collide with the southbound train head-on to derail it, stopping its mission of destroying Brasada Spur stations along the route. As the Brasada Spur train approached a tunnel near the half-way point, the engineer could feel the oncoming train heading towards them on the tracks, but told Bart they wouldn't be able to jump off the train until it made it through the tunnel. Just as the train cleared the tunnel, the engineer jumped off. Bart blew the train whistle three times as a signal and the rest of the Brasada Spur men also jumped, just in time to save themselves from the head-on collision.[1]
