Byrnes, Edd

Born July 30, 1933;

New York City, New York, USA

Maverick Actor

Born Edward Breitenberger, Edd had an unhappy childhood in New York City. When he was 13, his alcoholic and often-absent father was found dead in a basement, and Edd dropped his surname in favor of his mother's maiden name. As a teenager, Edd spent time in a local gym and developed an athletic body. At 17, he was approached by a man who offered to take "physique" photos of him for free. Although a heterosexual, this relationship led Edd to a few years of "hustling" rich men. One of these men mentored him and encouraged him to get into acting.[1]

Byrnes arrived in Los Angeles the day James Dean died. With Dean gone, Byrnes' brooding and youthful good looks landed him parts in the James Dean mold. After a few minor roles in film and television, he landed the role that would make him famous, that of Kookie in 77 Sunset Strip with Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. His breakout character became extremeley popular amongst younger fans. Young men emulated his trademark hair-combing mannerisms and his duet with Connie Stevens, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb," became a top-five hit.[1]

Much like James Garner, Byrnes grew disillusioned with his stifling contract with Warner Brothers and, having lost several important film roles as a result, walked of the 77 Sunset Strip set. He fell into alcohol and drug abuse in the ensuing months. Once his dispute was settled with the studio, he returned to the set, but changes in his role were rejected by the audience and the show was canceled.[1]

Byrnes found it difficult to outgrow his stereotyped character into the 1960s, and although he continued working in bit parts into the 1990s, he never regained the level of fame he enjoyed as a teen idol.[1]
