Canal Street trams, New Orleans, 1877.[2]

Canal Street

Major thoroughfare in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1]

Established the southwest boundary of the French Quarter. Originally named for a canal that was to connect the Mississippi River with Lake Pontchartrain. The canal was never constructed, but the street became New Orleans' main pedestrian and vehicular thoroughfare dividing the older Creole neighborhoods and those of the more recent and growing American population. It became known as a neutral ground between the two, as well as a center for dining, shopping, entertainment and socializing.[1]

Escape to Tampico: In June of 1877, Bret Maverick stayed at the Hotel Claibourne, situated on Canal Street.[3]
