Carter, Fred
Undertaker in La Mesa, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1] (March 20, 1839 – October 16, 1917)[2]
In May of 1876, Fred Carter helped Bart Maverick and the sheriff uncover why Daisy Haskell shot and presumably killed Bart, who had been hired by Daisy to travel with her, posing as her husband John. In order to fool Daisy and Henrique Fillipe that Bart was dead, he staged a funeral parlor scene, having Bart portray his own corpse when Daisy and Fillipe came to view the body. Later that afternoon, Carter and the sheriff staged a funeral at Bart's graveside, having raised a false grave marker for John Haskell.[1]
