Rancher in La Mesa, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1] (September 7, 1821 – November 28, 1888)[2]
In April of 1876,[2] Bart Maverick and Daisy Haskell traveled[1] up the Santa Fe Trail[2] by stage with a the cattleman, along with a fence salesman. To pass the time, the fence salesman spoke enthusiastically of barbed wire, to which the cattleman took strong objection, calling it "an invention to kill off cattle… either by starvation or tearing them to bits." The cattleman explained to Daisy that the stagecoach driver would pick up speed to travel through Comanche country more quickly. The next day, the stage was attacked by a band of Comanche, of which the cattleman killed at least three with his revolver. Afterwards, he expressed his contempt for the fence salesman, who had cowered next to Daisy without taking arms to help fight the Comanche. In La Mesa in May, after Daisy attempted to kill Bart to fake her husband John's death, the cattleman was surprised to find Bart still in town. Still believing Bart to be Daisy's husband, he asked Bart where his wife was to which Bart replied, "We quarreled."[1]
