Maverick Actor
Born Robert Chandler Oakes, Lane Chandler's real-life experience as the son of a horse rancher near Culbertson, Montana, began to land him bit parts in Hollywood westerns. In order to gain leading roles, studio executives suggested he adopt the stage name of Lane Chandler.
With the advent of talkies and possibly due to his husky voice, Chandler found himself starring in low-budget westerns and taking more supporting roles in other films. When television came in, he began appearing in numerous series westerns such as The Lone Ranger, Have Gun — Will Travel, Cheyenne, Gunsmoke and of course, Maverick.[1]
