According to Hoyle: In October[2] 1876, Bret Maverick traveled on the Delta Star from St. Louis to New Orleans. While on board, he met Samantha Crawford. Bret was unaware that she had been hired by George Cross to get into a poker game with him and, if necessary, invoke an obscure rule of Hoyle to win as much money from him as she could. On the night before they docked in New Orleans, she managed to win $12,000 from him without using the rule of Hoyle.[1]
