Doctor
Medical doctor at Fort Adobe, Arizona Territory[1] in 1867.[1] (January 1, 1819 – August 16, 1878)[2]
On October 24, 1867, shortly after the arrival of the Miller cattle drive at Fort Adobe, the doctor examined Jessie Hayden's bullet wounds, sustained two days earlier. Hayden had managed to hang onto life through the last two days of an aggressive cattle drive with a bullet in his chest, but the doctor was unable to save him. Moments before Hayden's death, Bret Maverick called the doctor into Hayden's room to be a witness the deathbed statement of Hayden retracting the murder charges against Bret and his Brother Bart. However, with Hayden's last breath, he changed his mind about clearing the Mavericks' names with dying words, "Hang, Maverick."[1]
