double or nothing
A wager to settle a debt. The outcome determines whether the debtor must pay twice the owed amount or nothing at all.
War of the Silver Kings: Bret Maverick settled his bar tab at McComb’s for the money he owed on the whiskey he bought for Joshua Thayer and himself on a double-or-nothing roll of the dice. Knowing he’d won without looking at the outcome, he tipped his hat and bid Thayer good-night.[1]
