Elkins
Townsman in Hallelujah, New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[1]
In September of 1876, Bret Maverick was framed by Cliff Sharp for Sharp's robbery of Hallelujah's Wells Fargo office of $40,000 and killing its clerk. Bret was found guilty and while awaiting his hanging, a wagering pool was held at a Hallelujah saloon to bet whether Bret would disclose where the Wells Fargo money had been hidden. Elkins wagered five dollars that Bret would not reveal the money's location.[1]
