fence salesman
Traveling barbed wire salesman in New Mexico Territory in 1876.[2] (September 27, 1840 – January 21, 1923)[2]
The Jeweled Gun: In April of 1876,[3] Bart Maverick and Daisy Haskell traveled by stagecoach with a barbed wire fence salesman, who was enthusiastic in the promotion of his product. A cattleman, also traveling on the stage, expressed his contempt for barbed wire and by extension, for that of the fence salesman himself. As the stage traveled through Comanche country, the fence salesman pretended not to be worried. But when a band of Comanche attacked and the other passengers defended the stage with rifles and hand guns, the fence salesman cowered below the stage's window with Daisy. Though he intended to travel all the way to La Mesa, he did not reboard the stage after the next stop out of embarrassment.[4]
