flank
Cattle trail-hand position, either on the left or right of the herd.[1]
The cowboy riding left or right flank rides about two thirds of the way back from the front of the cattle drive, watching for strays cutting them back into the herd.[1]
Trail West to Fury: Bart Maverick assigned Rush to ride right flank and Stu to ride the left flank at the outset of the Miller cattle drive in Tulare Meadow, August 12, 1867.[2]
