George
Deputy in White Rock, Texas in 1872.[1] (November 26, 1833[2] – June 13, 1872[1])
On June 13, 1872, Bret Maverick was arrested and jailed in White Rock, Texas for the murder of Bert Nicholson. George complained of having to watch over Bret rather than being able to go home and sleep for the night. Shortly after Bret was jailed, Felton posed as Bret's attorney to gain access to Bret's cell to formulate a plan of escape with him. Felton locked George in Bret's cell until Bret was able to escape on George's horse. Once Bret got away, Felton shot and killed George, making it appear that Bret had killed him.[1]
