Hanson
Seaman[1] aboard the HMS Tempest in 1871. (December 1, 1836 – November 7, 1906)[2]
An agent of the Committee operating in San Francisco, assigned to aid and investigate international merchant shipping concerns.
In December of 1871,[2] Hanson sailed aboard the HMS Tempest in an advisory capacity on behalf of Bret Maverick's claim on the Flying Scud. Four days before reaching Midway Island, the Tempest's captain informed Hanson they would be changing course to pick up survivors in a small boat spotted some distance off their starboard bow. While peering at the survivors through his spyglass, Hanson informed Bret it may be longer than four days to Midway due to the rescue operation. Bret borrowed Hanson's spyglass and realized one of the survivors in the boat was Brother Bart. Having found Bart, Bret told Hanson that unless the captain had any other reason for going on to Midway, there was no need.[2]
