Hatchet Valley Mining Company
Mining company in Clayville,[1] New Mexico Territory, in 1878.[2]
Founded in 1872, the company operated turquoise, gold and silver mines in the Hatchita Valley to the west of Big Hatchet Peak in southwestern New Mexico Territory. Named for the valley in which it was situated, Hatchita, Spanish for "Little Hatchet." The word "Little" was lost from the name so as not to be confused with the nearby Little Hatchet Mine.[2]
In July of 1878,[2] Bret Maverick bought a Bactrian camel named Fatima from Mr. Brimmer in Clayville for $200 to cover a poker bet. Brimmer introduced Bret to Fatima outside the Hatchet Valley Mining Company's Clayville office.[1]
