To ask for another card in blackjack.[1]
If the new card totals more than twenty-one in combination with the rest of the player's hand, the player loses.[1]
Stampede: In April of 1877,[2] Bret Maverick met Coral Stacey on the Dakota Queen on the Missouri River, bound for Deadwood. After winning more than $4,000 from Tony Cadiz in a game of poker, Coral suggested to Bret that he team up with her in Deadwood. Before Bret could respond, Cadiz had Battling Kreuger knock him out. Cadiz and Coral robbed Bret of all his money and had Kreuger throw him overboard.[3] In May,[2] Bret caught up to Coral in Deadwood, who was dealing blackjack at the Golden Nugget Saloon. Bret stepped up to her table to play blackjack. He surprised her, reminding her they were going to team up. Startled, Coral said she did not remember Bret agreeing, to which Bret replied that it was difficult to talk from the bottom of the Missouri River, and addressed Coral as Mrs. Cadiz. Again taken aback, Coral asked how Bret had found out she was Cadiz's wife. Bret told her of his chance meeting with Dandy Jim Buckley on a sand bar, who had informed him. Bret looked at his cards and asked for her to hit him. She replied, "You're tempting me."[3]
