Horton, Moose
Town bully and saloon customer at the Golden Chance Saloon in Bent Forks,[1] Nebraska in 1871. (May 5, 1822 – February 25, 1903)[2]
One day in 1871, Moose Horton played a practical joke on Charlie in the Golden Chance Saloon. Bret Maverick, having witnessed the prank, decided Moose deserved to have one played on him. So Bret, needing a small stake for a meal and to buy into a poker game, played the belt game on Moose, taking him for five dollars. Later that evening, Bret had given Mike Brill ten dollars to repay Moose, plus interest, for his unwitting "loan." But before Mike could pass the money along to Moose, Moose picked a fight with Bret to get even.[1]
