Jeff

Stableman in White Rock, Texas in 1872.[1] (October 22, 1830 – December 28, 1895)[2]

A simple man, owner of the town livery table.[1]

On June 12, 1872, Bret Maverick rode into White Rock, having spent two weeks tracking the Kid. His first stop in town was Jeff's livery stable. Giving Jeff charge of his horse, Bret asked if he had seen the Kid pass through town. Jeff told Bret he had come into White Rock three days earlier, and had been playing poker in Fred's Paradise Saloon since he arrived.[1]

Later that night, Bret found Mary Shane shivering and crying in the street over an argument she said she had had with Bert Nicholson. Having told Bret she lived eight miles outside of town, he offered to rent a buggy from Jeff and drive her safely home.[1]

After Mary disappeared without a trace in the shadows of the night, Bret returned the buggy to the livery stable and asked Jeff about the girl. Jeff didn't know her by name, but told Bret a girl matching her description had lived at Mrs. Clemmer's boarding house.[1]

The next day, Nicholson was found dead and the town suspected Bret of the murder. Jeff recalled being the first one Bret had talked to when he rode into town, but now remembered it differently. On retrospect, Jeff felt he knew Bret was a killer as soon as he saw him, and that Bret was obviously in town to kill the Kid. But after Sideburns killed the Kid first, Bret still wanted to kill someone so chose Nicholson.[1]
